Know your Farmer

know YOUR farmer

There are many wonderful local farms available to you.  If you do not find a connection with Lazy Dog Farms by all means explore your options and discover a farm for you.  The most important thing from our perspective is that you see the importance of buying local and supporting local farms.  Don't hesitate to ask questions.  We know many local farmers who are a wealth of knowledge and who are very sharing with their expertise and experiences.  The community of farmer friends that we have made on our journey has helped us in more ways than we can count.

With that being said the increasing consumption of locally grown agricultural products has led to some deceptive practices.  One should not assume that because it is sold at a farmers market that it is local or organic.  The best consumer protection is to know your farmer and to be comfortable and accepting of their production practices.

By being an informed consumer you protect not only your pantry but the local small scale farmers. We cannot compete with mega mart products and when they are being sold next to a legit local farmer it undermines our success.

Questions you may want to ask:

  • Do you grow or produce everything you sell?
  • How do you decide what to grow or produce?
  • How do you fertilize your crops?
  • How do you deal with insects, pests, and diseases?
  • What do your animals eat?
  • Where do your animals live?
  • Do you medicate or provide hormones to your animals?
